La quinceañera perfecta busca a sus chambelanes

Krysten Ceballos, una joven de 14 años, alta y bonita, de piel dorada y con reflejos en su cabello castaño, entra en un estudio de baile lleno de espejos. Va acompañada de su madre, una tía y una amiga. Toma asiento al frente y comienza a revisar a dos decenas de muchachos adolescentes.

Break it Off, un tema de Sean Paul y Rihanna, brota de un parlante. Los chambelanes se entregan a la danza, en hileras de cuatro.

Brandon Lomelí, un joven de 14 años cuyos hoyuelos en las mejillas se acentúan con su dulce sonrisa, lanza los puños al aire, al compás del hip-hop, concentrado en ensalsar sus movimientos con actitud. Quiere que la chica lo escoja, pero sólo tiene 10 segundos de audición antes de que avance la siguiente hilera.

Abel Dávila, de 17 años, se desplaza con movimientos elegantes.

"Tienes que improvisar. Tienes que lucir bien. Tienes que lanzarle una mirada que diga, 'Hola, ¿qué onda?' ¿Sabes?", dice.

Krysten sabe. Brandon y Abel son elegidos.

Nada hace sentir más a las adolescentes como princesas que estar rodeada de chicos atractivos, por tanto, Krysten no está dejando nada librado al azar para su baile de quince años.

Al igual que un número creciente de chicas que están a punto de cumplir 15 años, Krysten elegirá y contratará a la mayoría de sus chambelanes para su gran baile de quince años.

Tres amigos y familiares la escoltarán, pero pagará por los otros 11 chambelanes, pues el cortejo tradicional para las quinceañeras abarca 14 damas y chambelanes, que representan cada año de vida de la joven. Krysten elegirá a 11 jóvenes modernos que ensayan en Chucke's Choreography, un estudio de baile ubicado al norte de Houston.

Este es uno de varios estudios que se especializa en chambelanes para los bailes de quinceañeras.

En otra ruptura con la tradición, Krysten ha decidido no tener damas. Las chicas, dice, son un problema; además no quiere que nadie la opaque.

Negocio en auge
Alrededor de 400,000 jóvenes hispanas cumplen 15 cada año en Estados Unidos, y la industria de quinceañeras, la cual representa 400 millones de dólares al año, intenta mantenerse al ritmo de la demanda creciente, con fiestas más grandes y extravagantes. Nuevas revistas, líneas de ropa formal y paquetes de viajes diseñados para las quinceañeras cobran un lugar cada vez mayor dentro de la sociedad en general.

El concepto de "alquile a un chambelán" está causando furor.

A fin de año, la dueña del estudio en Houston, Erika Chucke Peña planea expandir su negocio con instalaciones más amplias.

El baile de quinceañeras se centra en la joven, pero en el interior del estudio, los chicos también experimentan su propia transformación hacia la madurez. Trabajan durante largas horas con la esperanza de transformarse en "el" bailarín, en el chambelán que las jóvenes quieren.

Antes, los chambelanes que se alquilaban para los bailes de quinceañeras, tenían 20 o más años, y eran integrantes de algún ballet folklórico; en cambio, los chicos de Chucke son, en su mayoría, adolescentes mexicano-estadounidenses que han invertido largas horas en perfeccionar su apariencia y dominar los pasos de salsa, vals y hip-hop.

Se esfuerzan por ser los mejores en la ciudad, porque para las jóvenes, su fiesta de quince años es un acontecimiento que sucede sólo una vez en la vida.

"Hemos asistido a fiestas de quince años que están muy desorganizadas, poco profesionales, ese tipo de cosas", explica Lalainia Ceballos, madre de Krysten. "Los resultados fueron buenos, pero como comprenderás, si estás invirtiendo 23,000 dólares en el baile de quince años no esperamos que sólo esté bien, sino que sea perfecto".

Una imagen para atesorar
Todos conocen a Peña, joven de 26 años, cuyo sobrenombre, Chucke se deriva del hecho de que usaba zapatos de tenis de la marca Converse en los días en que bailaba break.

Chucke ha visto cómo ha evolucionado el negocio de las quinceañeras desde que era una niña en Houston, pues acudía a estas fiestas acompañando a su padre, un disc jockey de bailes de 15 años. Al llegar a la adolescencia, cobraba 100 dólares para enseñar al cortejo de las quinceañeras a bailar el vals tradicional. Ensayaban en salones de viernes por la noche o en los hogares de las chicas.

Fue por aquella época en que se dio cuenta que era difícil lograr que los chicos se comprometieran a ser chambelanes. En marzo de 2004, comenzó a contratar y entrenar a un grupo reducido de muchachos adolescentes. Ahora cuenta con un elenco de 60 bailarines que reciben 100 dólares por cada baile de quince años. Son alumnos de preparatorias en toda la ciudad y en muchos suburbios.

Chucke ofrece una variedad de productos, desde un DVD para planear la fiesta, a un costo de 39.95 dólares, hasta un amplio paquete de 2,400 dólares que incluye bailarines y coreografía para todo el cortejo de las quinceañeras.

La mayoría de las clientes llega por recomendación verbal de chicas que asistieron a los quince años de una amiga o prima y a quienes gustó lo que vieron; en algunas ocasiones, las jóvenes solicitan a un bailarín específico.

"A medida en que participamos en mayor número de bailes de quince, más son las personas que nos ven. Es obvio que si sabes bailar y tienes la apariencia que quieren, te van a elegir", dice Michael Gonzo Gonzales, uno de los primeros bailarines que contrató Chucke, y quien goza de mucha popularidad.

Y Chucke les recuerda a todos que ella vigila cada uno de sus pasos, tanto en la pista de baile como afuera de ésta. Instruye a sus jóvenes para que sean generosos con sus elogios a la quinceañera, pero les advierte que está prohibido que las inviten a salir durante la temporada antes del baile. "Su conducta afuera del estudio puede afectar la reputación de Chucke's", dice.

Durante un ensayo, advierte a los jóvenes: "Si se meten en pleitos en la escuela, o hacen cosas tontas en la escuela, me enteraré. Y se los digo de una vez, eso afectará su estatus en mi equipo".

Gonzo, de 18 años, sirve de ejemplo para los demás, en lo que se refiere a la manera en que baila y actúa, y por la dedicación que muestra a las personas que pagan por el baile de quince años. Cuando los bailarines son contratados para el trabajo, explica, "si la chica en la silla quiere un baile de quince años y luego ve a uno de los jóvenes de Chucke vestido de pandillero y bailando grinding con una chica, no va a querer a nadie así. Sobre todo los padres. Ellos se fijan mucho en eso".

Dar seguridad
Los bailarines ensayan al ritmo de Las caderas no mienten, de Shakira, con Deahna Ortiz, una rubia de la escuela preparatoria Cy-Fair que decidió a última hora que quería un baile de quinceañera, aunque no supiera mucho acerca de su importancia cultural.

A medida que la música adquiere un ritmo lento, Shaquira canta, "Ay, puedo ver tu cuerpo en movimiento", llega el pie para lanzar las manos al aire, flexionar las rodillas, girar las caderas, a la manera de la película The Matrix.

Chucke se exaspera.

Jacob DeLeón, de 14 años, y sin duda uno de los más jóvenes, mantiene las manos arriba pero cerca de sus hombros, mientras que se gira como si los hombros estuvieran separados de la cadera.

Con un ruido audible se repite la canción.

"¿Puedo ver que todos son Matrix?", gruñe Chucke y se coloca frente a Jacob.

"No se asusten. De nuevo, mantengan la cadera en alto y flexionen las rodillas. Muevan la cadera hacia atrás", ordena.

Jacob gira desde la cintura.

"¡Mueve la cadera hacia atrás! No la contengas, Jacob".

Chucke señala a un bailarín cercano.

"Él la mueve. La gira hasta atrás", dice.

El rostro de Jacob es suave, cubierto por una pelusa semejante al durazno, sus mejillas están sonrosadas por el esfuerzo de bailar. Es uno de los pocos que aún lleva lentes y frenos, y se está dejando crecer el cabello para trenzarlo o pintarse destellos. Chucke amortigua su crítica con palabras como "baby" y "m'hijo". Sabe que él adora bailar.

Jacob comenzó en las clases de hip-hop de niños y se esforzó mucho para formar parte del elenco. Su madre dice que el baile le ha ayudado tener más confianza en sí mismo. Jacob ha dado audiciones para otras fiestas de quince años, pero Deahna es la primera chica que lo elige.

El rechazo es otra parte del proceso. Es posible que a las jóvenes no les guste la manera en que alguno baila, o que lo consideren demasiado corto de estatura, o que su cabello y ropas no son las adecuadas. Los muchachos aprenden pronto que la apariencia es importante.

También aprenden a manejar el rechazo.

"Les ayuda a ser mejores personas en general", dice Chucke.

Después del número final para los quince años de Deahna (un baile en el que ella participa con los chicos de Chucke y amigos de la preparatoria Cypress-Faribanks en una cadencia de percusiones), los jóvenes se retiran a los laterales, conforme entra el DJ.

Jacob es el primero en regresar a la pista de baile, enseñando a algunas chicas los pasos de Cupid Shuffle.

En minutos, otros chambelanes se unen y la pista de baile se llena.

Todo se centra en la apariencia
Los chicos más jóvenes siguen el ejemplo de "los" bailarines, quienes son cuidadosos para crearse una apariencia que refleje la moda urbana. Parte del atuendo son sus zapatos de tenis Puma o Vans. También lo son sus shorts y pantalones cargo. Usan mucho gel o cera en el cabello, en las cejas, las axilas y las piernas. Se rocían por completo con Unforgivable, de Sean John, o con Chrome.

Brandon lleva trenzas. Lo desdeñaron como chambelán durante seis meses, hasta que comenzó a peinarse con trenzas apretadas que le llegan más allá de los hombros.

Además, perdió 5 pulgadas (12 cm) de cintura.

La madre de Brandon, Martha Lomelí, acude con frecuencia al estudio y asiste a todos los bailes. Lo ha visto todo: fiestas lujosas, los pleitos entre dos chicas adolescentes que salieron de los baños hasta llegar a la pista de baile.

Se regodea con los cumplidos de otras madres, cuando le dicen que su hijo se ha convertido en magnífico bailarín.

"Para él, es una pasión", señala Martha. Y después añade con gratitud que los jóvenes "no tienen tiempo para sentirse aburridos. No tienen tiempo para amigos que les harían daño. Esto es como una gran familia".

Brandon es encantador y por lo mismo distribuye su tiempo entre varias amigas que ha conocido en los bailes de quince; son chicas con quienes, en general, se comunica a través de su celular. Los muchachos de más edad, sobre todo los que aspiran a ser bailarines profesionales, prefieren no tener amigas.

Las chicas pueden ser buenas compañeras de baile, pero se pueden volver celosas.

"He conocido a algunas chicas aquí y allá, y hemos platicado. Pero no intento ser un tipo de 'Acompáñame para siempre', porque por el momento estoy muy ocupado", dice Gonzo.

Además, las reglas del estudio ordenan mantenerse disponibles en todo momento. Las chicas quieren pensar que tienen una oportunidad con ellos.

Muchos jóvenes se reúnen en torno a la pista de baile en un salón de recepciones al oeste de Houston. En el centro, una chica delgada en un vestido enorme color turquesa y sin mangas, baila con su padre, al compás de los sonoros instrumentos de metal de una banda.

Danielle DeLeón está radiante. Siempre soñó con este momento. Viene de una familia que vive para bailar, en bodas, aniversarios, fiestas de quince años o bailes.

Los bailarines de Chucke se hallan sentados al fondo del salón; su participación será más tarde. Para la mezcla musical de esta noche, con el tema de La Pantera Rosa, hip-hop y salsa, los jóvenes llevan chalecos negros con corbatas rosas, máscaras al estilo de El Zorro y no llevan camisa. En otras ocasiones visten trajes de etiqueta blancos o camisas rasgadas: lo que la quinceañera quiere que vistan.

Gonzo está aquí. Desde hace tres años, cuando prefirió las clases de baile a los deportes, ha sido elegido como chambelán en decenas de bailes de quince años.

Terminó la preparatoria en diciembre, un semestre antes de lo esperado y asiste a una universidad comunitaria. Pronto se concentrará en enseñar a jóvenes bailarines, al tiempo que continúa con su propia formación. Sin embargo, sus días como chambelán ya se aproximan a su fin.

"Una vez que tienes 17 o 18 años, ya estás un tanto mayor para ser chambelán", explica.

Sólo la quinceañera tendrá siempre 15 años.

La Quinceanera Ideal

A perfect game is defined by Major League Baseball as a game in which a pitcher (or combination of pitchers) pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings and in which no opposition player reaches first base. There is not such term in a DJ’s world, other than when everything goes flawlessly as planned and at the end you are able to walk away with a smile in your face.

After enduring over twenty two years as a professional entertainer, I have seen the good, the bad of the ugly while performing at a variety of social events. Yes, as ugly as seen a groom punching a member of the bride’s family or seeing a bride getting drunk beyond oblivion and being unable to reason.

This article is not about bad cases beyond my control, but about cases where a “perfect game was pitched”. Yesterday was one of those times, worthy of mention and blissful remembrance.

From the time we got to the luxurious hotel, set up, to the time we gladly accepted a small tip and the many compliments from different people, including the parents and people who worked and managed the venue.

The planning was magnificent, the crowd responded to every needle drop, and danced the night away to virtually everything we played. The system kicked butt with clear highs and throbbing base, without distortion. Every song searched was found and the announcements were promptly and accurately annunciated.

This was possible thanks to the cooperation and complete understanding of how the reception took shape, by the birthday girl, the parents and everyone involved.

Young and old, enjoyed a night of fun and dance, under the flashing lights and the exceptional performance delivered on every musical pitch. The waltz was executed like out of a fantasy, and the level of happiness just simply flowed through out the evening.

I must say, that was a good day and a “perfect play”.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this letter is to touch bases with you, as my client or prospect client, with the sole purpose of keeping in touch, and just making sure everything is O.K.

WHAT I DO

Many heard me say before, “there’s only fifty two weekends in a year, and for this particular reason I like to fill my schedule, since this is my only source of income.

HOW IT WORKS

The way I normally operate is as follows:
a) initial contact
b) verbal agreement
c) meeting
d) proposal and written agreement
e) Sign contract and retainer.

Presently I do sub-contract work for Jody, John and Daniel

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT

Typically once I give you my word, the date is reserved for you, until further notice, and in the mean time is marked as pending for a week, as courtesy, after that, the date becomes available for anybody, and it does not show on the calendar.

WHAT I EXPECT

I expect to be kept in the loop, because this is my bread and butter, once a date is taken or given out, is pretty much gone forever, and I can’t make it out. Uninformed event planners see it as just a “gig” on the calendar; I see it as part of my budget to feed my family. In short, is a give and take situation?

RATES

My rates vary, depending on the following factors:

a) Number of guests, a small 20-70, medium 70-120, large 120-250; huge 250-500
b) Time of year, day of the week, time of the day, amount of hours.
c) Place of the event, type of event,
d) First time clients, repeat business, subcontractors, friends and relatives.

CALENDAR:

Please take a look at the calendar and please see that:
a) your event is written on the right date
b) Please notify if there is any type of discrepancy.
c) Please don’t panic!

The art of finding the right specialty D.J.

Many articles have been written about how to find a disc jockey or master of ceremonies, however not many write about specialty dj’s.

A specialty dj is someone who dedicates his time and energy to learn a niche in the wedding industry, because let’s face it, not all dj’s were created alike.

Among the lists of special moments in a person’s life there is the wedding, of course. Not only is it special, but in most cases very expensive. If you paint your house a different color, and you don’t like it, you can always repaint it, but if something goes wrong on your wedding day, you can’t recreate or relive the moment. DJ’s are often times under rated, and under estimated, for some reason the photography takes more priority to many, but what if the music was not good? Or the disc jockey that was hired to entertain didn’t have the right music? Bad news all around and people will remember it. Consider making a list of priorities and place the sound in your very own list, (in other words, don't rely on other people's experience), when it comes to the music.

You can find any DJ any day of the week, but in a calendar year there are only 52 weekends, and good entertainers are booked months in advance, so once a couple have made up their minds, it is advisable to find and book the dj right away.

Of course it is not easy, it’s like trying to find a needle in a hay stack, if there isn’t one recommended, by word of mouth, the phone book is the next step, providing you didn’t find one here. Do not dismay, there is always one available for you.

Furthermore, technology today has made it possible for anyone to be a music player, with music on the internet, MP3 players and easy-to-use equipment it has become less difficult to play amplified music. However, a wedding is not something you want to leave up to a rookie (I am sorry for those starting out) there are way too many details, that could possibly go wrong, and it is best to be in the hands of a seasoned professional.

When I look back at my own career when I started doing social events, back in 1985, I used to charge $200 per event, armed with two turntables, a mixer and a microphone I offered outstanding performances but my clients were mainly concerned in the cost of the music, they didn’t mind paying $800. For the cake, and $2,000. For the photographer.

Truthfully the key to whole thing is, finding someone who has the type of personality you want, because once again, not all are alike, there are cheesy performers, solemn, serious, jokers, and the list goes on. If when you meet with the person the chemistry hasn’t click on the first twenty minutes, forget it, it will not happen.

Don’t be shy to ask a million questions, and to be specific in telling him or her particular expectations. Tell him or her you want, and how you envision your event to be. Simply because there is more to be a Disc Jockey than just press “play”.

Don’t judge the book by its cover, and don’t gauge dj by how much they charge, because rates vary from state to state. Again, ask the dj this question before you say anything: What’s your specialty?

Like most of her friends at the time, Pat Valdez, 40, didn't celebrate her 15th birthday with a quinceañera.
"My parents couldn't afford it," said Valdez, as she sat on her sofa Sunday with her only daughter, 14-year-old Selena, in their north Houston home.
But by saving and planning ahead, she and her husband can afford to throw Selena a quinceañera — a party and religious ceremony she estimates will cost about $15,000 and entertain 500 of the family's relatives, co-workers and friends.
As the U.S. Hispanic population grows, this coming-of-age event, akin to a sweet 16 dance and bat mitzvah, has grown into a $400-million-a-year industry that's spread among formal-wear companies, limousine services, party planners, banquet halls and caterers.
It's gotten big enough — some 400,000 U.S. Latinas turn 15 each year — that the industry supports two magazines offering tips and advice on everything from hair and makeup trends to "the best deals, steals and splurges for your 15th."
One of the magazines, Quince Girl, is hosting Quince Girl Bridal and Quinceñeara Expo this Sunday at Reliant Hall. Organizers are expecting 2,500 people.
"The growth of the quinceañera has been tremendous," said Cindy Benavides, president and chief executive officer of Dallas-based Strategic Events, which is helping Quince Girl do the expo. "Now it's back in vogue. They see the value of continuing the tradition."
So, too, does Houston's Wash Antique Limousine Service. It's showing off its 1932 Pierce-Arrow at the expo and will promote its fleet of seven vehicles because quinceañeras are one of its biggest moneymakers.
"It's a big market for us because we specialize in antique limos and they really like those types of cars," said Regenia Washington, manager at the company, which charges $100 an hour for a limo rental with a four-hour minimum, plus tip and tax.
And Laura Moreno, owner of John's Formal Wear & Bridal Boutique, will display an array of dresses at the event, including sequin-covered gowns.
"Girls like to sparkle," said Moreno, who took over the shop from her mother. "They want to be the princess of the night."
It's a costly tradition, with families spending anywhere from $3,000 to $25,000 on the affair, according to Benavides.
But despite the cost, these parties are gaining so much mainstream attention that Walt Disney World Resort is offering quinceañera celebrations, with theme parties such as the "Belle of the Ball" that can include a horse-drawn carriage and storybook entrance starting at $20,000.
To save some money, the Valdez family plans to purchase table arrangements and have Selena's photographs taken in Monterrey, Mexico.
Selena wants to make sure she looks elegant, and she's looking forward to dancing a waltz with her father.
"I'm excited and nervous, just about the way everything is going to go that day," the eighth-grader said.
Although the ritual symbolizes her daughter is becoming a lady, Pat Valdez still has plenty of plans for Selena — like college graduation — and she's saving for that, as well.

Tips on Hiring a DJ

Do You Provide a Written Contract?
It is very important to confirm your booking in writing. Terms should be clearly defined to avoid future problems.
A: Yes all dealings are made through a writen contract. In 20 years I haven't missed an event.

Are you insured?
The DJ should have liability insurance to protect you and your guests in case of an injury or fire caused by the DJ’s equipment. Such accidents rarely ever happen, but you wouldn’t drive your car without insurance so why take chances when it comes to hiring a DJ? Insurance is provided on events basis, depending on the venue and the event. Yes, I am insured.

Is Your Equipment of Professional Quality?
There is a difference between home audio and professional road-worthy equipment. The equipment a DJ uses should be built to go on the road each and every day!
A: My equipment is top of the line and truly professional.

Will You Listen To My Music Suggestions?
Many DJ's are of the opinion that they know what music is best for their audience and won't take requests. The DJ should listen to requests and play them whenever appropriate.
A: 100%, a list is discussed and filled up in advance.

Will You Dress Appropriately at My Affair?
It is important that your entertainer look the part by dressing formal or semi-formal, according to your preference. Themed events and picnics require different attire.
A: Weddings I would normally wear a Tux or Coat and tie, depending on the event, to quinceaneras I dress formal but comfortable. All attire is checked with the client.

Will You Play The Music At An Appropriate Level?
The biggest concern voiced by prospective clients is the volume level of the music. A professional DJ knows to keep the volume at a level appropriate for the guests, especially during cocktails and the dinner hour. Yes, the proper level according to the venue and the space.

Do You Do More Than Just Play Music at the Affair?

Dear Friends,
As usual, I like to keep you up to date on all information regarding YOUR DJ.
This past weekend i had the opportunity to do a job in Las Vegas. Which gave me the change to play and work, or work and play...you know what i mean.
Left SFO Friday night, Arrive to my hotel in Vegas at 2a.m. on the day of the event. By 1:PM I picked up the rental van, by 2 PM I picked out the speakers to be used at the event.
At 6PM I arrived to set up, by 6:45 I did a sound check, the starting time was 7:PM.
I met some of the nicest people at this event, most of them were from San Diego, L.A. and San Jose. The couple from San Diego and booked me online.
I truly look forward to hear from this group again, as I had the fortune to hear referrals from a lot of people all the time, so I do their kids baptisms, quinceaneras, sibling's weddings and anniversaries, etc.

Choosing the right DJ for your event.

You are probably looking into hiring a DJ for your big event, and of course you may have a lot of ideas, hopes and dreams regarding how you envision your special day to be.

I have been working professionally as a disc jockey since 1985, so I’ve pretty much seen the good, the bad and the ugly, of the industry. With that in mind, I would like to offer some free advice, which may be of help, before you make your final decision.

Let’s begin by realizing that what you need and what you want isn’t always what you may find, and what is available. Please hold this thought in mind and let’s discover what is out there:
“THE CHEAPEST DJ IN TOWN”; “Best DJ for the lowest price”; “DJ and photo for you”; “DJ in training, free for your wedding”; “One Stop Shop for your wedding”; “Best music for weddings and corporate events”; “Best DJ for all!! American, Mexican, Greek, Arabic, etc.”; “DJ for hire all night long $200”; “Wedding Coordination” (That’s how they wrote it). And the lists go on and on and on…

I don’t believe in bath mouthing any professional disc jockey, or any one who is trying to make a decent living from dj’ing, but by the same token, I do believe people who are planning to have an event should be prepared and well informed of the possibilities of disillusionment, created by either poor performance or lack of professionalism from individuals who call themselves dj’s, or the type who are only interested in cranking up their numbers.

DJ’s who claim they can do it all, are not aware of their own limitations. And I am not talking about multitalented individuals, but those who say they can do a Bar mitzvah the same way they would do a Quinceanera. A lot of DJ’s when you mention “Latin” to them, automatically think of “La Cucaracha”, “Besame Mucho” or “La Bamba”. You can’t knock them for trying, but a Wedding is a serious investment, which requires serious people to manage the entertainment. Your event should not be a training field or a learning experience for a Disc Jockey. There has to be a determined level of expertise before the big day.

The are five elements you should always remember when hiring a professional disc jockey:

A) Talent
B) Responsibility
C) Equipment
D) New music
E) Dollar value

A) Your DJ should be talented enough to make announcements, mix music, improvise whenever needed, trouble shoot his own equipment as well as the venue’s, find the proper music program for the occasion and must be able to “read” the crowd.
B) Responsibility is a rare commodity these days, mainly because the vast majority of disc jockeys concentrate on the creative aspect of the business, rather than the business aspect.
C) Equipment, here where a lot of clients get lost, since equipment is equipment and technically speaking sound is sound. Sure you’ll get sound out of a 1957 Hi-Fi RCA using an old 45 RPM record, but fidelity will probably won’t be the same, nor would the presentation be. I could and will write and entire article just about equipment along, but in this particular case, I will just say that not all sound equipments were created equal.
D) Whenever I play at social events, I mainly play the type of music that people can easily recognize and associate it with, but I try to stay as current as possible, just think of it, some dj’s are still playing “celebration” to break the ice.
E) Dollar Value is still the number one determining factor when thinking of hiring a DJ. Because of the expenses involved in developing film, it used to be photographers who could justify the expense. But how can a good dj afford the high prices of music, gasoline, insurance, reliable transportation, equipment depreciation, wear and tear, updates and upgrades in technology, etc.

Great music players are hard to come by, so when you find one, and you know the chemistry is there, that’s when you grab him or her. There are only 52 calendar weekends, one dj and many brides. A disc jockey can make or break your event and please remember, not everyone will get to see your pictures, but everyone will hear the music.

How To Choose Your Wedding Disc Jockey and caveats to avoid

Your wedding DJ determines whether your reception is a boom or bust...
There are thousands of wedding disc jockeys! But how do you find the wedding disc jockey that's perfect for you? Here you'll find all the caveats to avoid, questions to ask, what DJ equipment they should be using, and what you should have included in your contract. Many tips on this page are only our opinion, you must choose what you feel is right for your wedding.
Choosing your wedding DJ is the best part of your wedding preparations. You get to meet a lot of people who are generally nice, outgoing, and personable. Of course the big debate is DJ or Band. That's always one of the hard decisions a newlywed couple must make. The biggest advantage a wedding DJ has over a band is cost. There are some lousy bands out there and many awesome bands too, but many bands can cost a lot of money. I saw an excellent band at a function that charges $4000 for the 8 member group.
Band Or DJ? That is the question! Here we focus on DJs. Don't hire a band you can't see or hear first either at a function from someone you know perhaps, that you just happen to attend, or view for a few minutes on a video. People tend to get married within a year of their friends, and may see their future wedding vendors at work on other weddings. Remember, the bands need to take breaks, so they play only a few 15-20 minute sets. But this article is about DJ's. We chose a wedding disc jockey due to cost, and we did not have to worry about a marginal singer crooning our favorite songs out of tune, which we see a lot of here in Florida. Just because one person is a good singer in a good band, does not mean the rest of the world is. Anyone who plays in a band has seen their share of awful bands. And when a consumer advocate like me tries to point out both sides of the coin to consumers, the losers come out of woodwork to complain how useless I am. Those are the people you need to avoid. But I suspect that you'll have the least amount of problems with your DJ than any other vendor, because the vast majority of DJs are great. I've been to maybe 12 weddings in my life and 3 of those 12 weddings (25%) I thought the wedding disc jockey stunk. Many other guests at these weddings back me up about wedding DJs.
A good wedding DJ is cheaper than bands, and they dynamically work your wedding crowd for 4 hours. In rare cases a band might party hardy then decide they don't want to show up. This probably happens more than a DJ not showing up. Bands always arrive late at my friend's recording studio. And before any musicians get all indignant, it happened at my sister's wedding. She hired a highly recommended harpist who was out getting drunk when she should have been at the wedding. Luckily I had brought a wedding CD as backup, the catering manager brought out a CD player, and we had music for me to walk her up the aisle with. So it does happen.
Feedback Alert! What Causes that loud shrieking feedback?One problem that plagues MANY weddings with bands and DJ's is feedback. Let's call it Jeff's Law of Wedding Acoustics:
Keep the microphone away from the speakers!
Sounds easy on paper, but man, what a difficult concept for some DJs to grasp! Some bands can't grasp this simple concept and often the result is ear piercing feedback. They look around startled like they never heard feedback before, and the singer is standing with the microphone only one foot away from the speaker wondering what the cause is. We were at a wedding and the band produced feedback half a dozen times. Good wedding DJs and bands never produce feedback. Wedding guests hate this.
Interviewing Prospective Wedding DJs
Get Wedding DJ References From Friends, Coworkers, Wedding Reception HallsYour best resource in finding your wedding DJ is people you know. Ask around, try locally famous DJs from radio stations. Some people moonlight as wedding disc jockeys and are good at it. Talk to recent newlyweds, ask your wedding reception hotel or resort, they may have a list of preferred vendors for you to call, wedding DJs whom they trust. This list contains vendors that the resort has worked with and knows to be reliable and professional. The resort's reputation is stake also. But beware of secondary hotels or reception sites that might not be as scrupulous. Some caterers may get a kickback, so know who you are dealing with. Our DJ was recommended to us by the catering manager at the Boca Raton Resort where we had our reception. Our DJ also worked her wedding, and she oversees many weddings every year so she knew who the right DJ was, and boy was she right!
Interview 3-5 Wedding Disc JockeysDon't rush to pick your wedding DJ, they all have different personalities. Ask to see videos from previous weddings so you can view a few minutes of their work. Scrutinize wedding videos from friends to see if you like their DJ. If you happen to see your potential DJ while you are a guest at another wedding before you make your decision, that helps too. Many people of marrying age attend several weddings in a year, and this is a good time to start scoping your wedding DJ and other wedding vendors. If you have special song requests, ask the DJ if they have it or if they can get it. If your reception is complex, and in a big well known resort or hotel you want a true professional who works in the big places, not someone who travels the condo clubhouse circuit. Many DJ's may get offended by this, but you really want someone with the experience of working with the catering departments of these larger venues. This synergy between DJ and catering manager is what keeps your function running smoothly. A DJ's talent should reach far beyond just motivating the crowd or making the announcements at the right time. They must have their finger on the pulse of your wedding and know everything that is going on. The only way this can happen is when they have a good working relationship with the venue staff.
Questions To Ask Your Prospective Wedding DJ
Is the DJ familiar with your wedding venue?
Ask your DJ if they have done weddings at your reception site before. It helps that they know the wedding venue, how to get there, and they have a familiarity with the staff. Your wedding disc jockey may also be better prepared to deal with known issues or caveats with the wedding reception hall. Every little positive wedding DJ bullet item you find makes it less likely that you will have problems with your DJ. It does not mean you should reject the DJ if they have not been there before, but it's a nod in their favor.
Who will be your actual DJ spinning discs at your wedding?
This one is important. You would hate to spend an hour interviewing your wedding DJ and like their personality, only to be blindsided at your wedding by having another DJ show up, when you expected the DJ that you interviewed. Make absolutely certain your contract spells out exactly who will be your DJ. If you want the owner and not their employee it should be on the contract. The contract should also mention what time and place they are supposed to be. Call a month ahead of the wedding to verify. Nay verbal promises made by your wedding DJ should be in writing on the contract. They won't remember several months from now what they verbally promised you today.
What about wedding DJ overtime, and other unexpected or hidden fees?
Your contract should clearly specify all costs associated with your wedding DJ, including any assistant disc jockeys they will have with them, as well as special equipment lighting packages, or other fees that they pass on to you the client. You must also plan for overtime in case the reception runs longer than the contract specifies. The contract should clearly spell out how much extra it will cost you to have your wedding DJ for an extra hour or 2. It can cost $150 or more. Do not believe verbal promises stating they will work extra hours for free. Put it in writing in the contract, or they will not do it. Don't be blindsided like many brides and grooms are when there event runs over. I receive complaints from brides whose wedding ran over, and the DJ threatened to leave if not paid in cash right now. You don't want surprises, your wedding DJ contract should be a game plan that covers all bases so you know exactly how much your DJ will cost you.
What attire will your wedding disc jockey wear at your wedding?
Sounds like a no brainer, but you usually want your DJ to wear a tuxedo. The DJ at my brother's wedding was wearing black jeans and a shirt that was hanging out. He was supposed to be wearing a tuxedo. Even the photographer went up to this wedding DJ and chastised him.
How many years experience does this wedding DJ have? Will they play CD's you provide?
Some wedding disc jockey folks have a list of songs they play and except for the bride and groom first dance, do not give you much choice. Our wedding DJ to allowed us to choose at least 50% which is not the norm. Let your DJ be your guide as to what songs should be played. A good disc jockey reads the crowd and knows what to play. Be sure they know what NOT to play, as well as special songs you want to hear. Ask if they will accept requests from wedding guests. Your wedding disc jockey should be flexible with a wide selection, so requests from your wedding guests can be fulfilled. This step is VERY crucial, because your wedding DJ plays about 60 songs during your reception, and you want nothing but the best tunes to keep your dance floor crowded. If the DJ needs to intervene and suggest a song, heed them as they generally know what they are doing and keep up with the current trends. You want a wedding DJ who can adapt to any crowd. This DJ will be someone who is very well versed in all areas music. Don't try to give the DJ a tape or a list of 100% of the songs to play for the night. You hired a DJ not a juke box operator. If they stick to your play list, I can guarantee you'll have an empty dance floor. Your musical taste is not the same as 120 people at your wedding. Let your DJ do their job and keep your wedding guests happy.
Where will your wedding DJ setup? Is there a dance floor?
This is a rare need, but some wedding reception sites require your wedding DJ to bring a dance floor if the room does not have one. Some hotel banquet halls are all carpeted, without a hard floor for dancing. Also, you MAY not want a DJ who comes in and elevates themselves on the stage. We liked our wedding DJ's philosophy that the DJ should NEVER overshadow the bride and groom and he did NOT want to be up on the stage. Rather, he setup off the right closer to the crowd. Bucking tradition at the Boca Resort, we put our bridal party head table up on the stage. This allowed more space in the room for the guests, and ALL of them could see us.
Will your wedding disc jockey need to be fed at your wedding?
Be sure to feed your wedding DJ. Ask your DJ if they want to be fed. Some disc jockeys want food, some do not want to eat while they work. They deserve it though, because they might be there 4 hours with nothing to eat or drink. The caterer needs to know so they can bill you accordingly. They usually make sandwiches for the DJ's, musicians, photographers, etc., or you can just let them eat off your buffet. Verify pricing with the caterer, you would not want them to charge you $150 per head for a wedding DJ and an assistant disc jockey. The DJ at our wedding refused to be served food, don't know why. He felt we spent enough money and should not have to spend more to feed the DJ, so he eats before the wedding. He also felt it was unprofessional for the DJ to be eating when they should be working. We really admired his philosophy on this topic, but it's still ok to feed them, they'll be there 4 hours. The hotel would have charged $18 for his food. We could not even get him to take a Coke. It's always nice to feed your vendors. We even gave him some chocolate and a centerpiece to take home to his wife after the reception.
Does your wedding DJ have a request form for you to fill out?
Ask for a list of wedding requests and suggestions in all categories. Some wedding DJs have a request form for you to fill out, so they can have everything ready for the wedding. Some obscure songs can take a while for them to obtain.
Does your wedding DJ do corporate functions also?
Ask the DJ if they ever do corporate functions, and view sample videos. If you can find a talented wedding DJ who has experience in corporate functions, then you really have someone worth their weight in gold. These are true professionals with mastery of dealing with large scale projects and all the SNAFUs that go along with them. The DJ we chose does numerous corporate functions in addition to being an excellent wedding DJ, and companies have paid to fly him all over the place. If you are a wedding DJ, this is a good selling point. Not a deal maker, but impressive, and it's ok to use a DJ that does not do corporate work.
What problems has the DJ encountered at weddings and how did they solve them?
You want a wedding DJ who is resilient, able to respond quickly to unforeseen mishaps that can mar your wedding. You can bet that many weddings look smooth, but had issues that were quickly seamlessly patched behind the scenes by DJs, caterers, and other vendors.
How Much Do Wedding DJs cost?
The best thing about wedding DJs is you can find a DJ to fit your budget, from casual guys who moonlight on parties, all the way up to professional wedding and corporate types. There are moonlighting DJ's that might only charge $300. You'll find DJ's charge $400 up to $1900 depending on the area. Your area may be less or more. In San Diego for example, you might expect to pay in the $1300 for a true professional top notch wedding DJ, and no fancy lighting. In 1996 in Boca Raton, FL, our DJ's employees charged $500. But we chose the owner, who was $750 and the price might be higher by now. Our DJ charged a bit more than most local DJ's, as he is very much in demand and highly recommended by several of our vendors. That's a great way to find vendors also. When several different wedding vendors point to the same person as the best, they are usually right. Our wedding DJ more than proved he was worth his weight in gold, as the evening went flawless, not one incidence of feedback, and the wireless headphone mic never gave out on him. Friends of mine several years ago had a local famous radio station DJ do their wedding too, that was pretty cool.
Let the DJ ask you questions too like what you do or don't want to hear. You want someone who takes an interest in what YOU want. We also met with the DJ one last time a few days before the wedding where he phonetically pronounced each person's name he was going to introduce at the wedding. This is a great added touch because no one likes to have their name mispronounced at a wedding. You may want to hire the owner of the DJ company, like we did, even though they usually charge more than the employees. The owner usually is the smartest one and has the most experience.
Stupid DJ Tricks
You may want to prevent some of these things from happening at your reception, a lot of them are preference.
No Business Cards On Display!Note: We get a lot of angry emails from wedding disc jockeys about this who arrogantly tell us "how very wrong you are!). They forget the basic rule of business that the customer is right. If the customer does not want you to put cards out, then honor their request and don't do it. Keep them in your pocket. If the customer does not mind, then you can put the cards out. We were at a wedding where the DJ had several different vendors' business cards sprawled out on top a speaker, and it made the place look like a flea market. If anyone wants the DJ's card, they can ask for one. All DJs carry cards in their pocket. Your reception is not a community bulletin board. All DJs take note: In our opinion, this is one of the tackiest things DJs do. Many guests at weddings we attended agree. This was the first thing we demanded but of course our DJ did not condone this activity either. I've had a few DJ's who chastise me for this view, and they claim this is acceptable, as people don't want to interrupt a DJ for their card. This will always be a controversial issue, but let me just point out that our DJ does not believe in putting business cards out. It all depends on your comfort factor. Everyone I asked about this disagrees with the DJs who send us the letters telling us how wrong we are on this subject, and some of them are down right rude and arrogant about it. OK so we are wrong and all our friends are wrong, and all our co workers are wrong, and we are the customers who don't really know what we want, and we are all just wrong? Give me a break.
No Revolving Police Lights! See this light off to the left? You don't want it at your wedding. Or maybe you do, if you want that police raid look at your wedding, it's your decision. This is just OUR opinion, but this is on the Tacky Top Ten, a cheap way for the DJ to give off a lot of light on a budget.
Not Enough Good Music Selection! We attended a wedding where my own 430 CDs were more than the DJ's! I know, he may only play 60 songs the whole night, so how many CD's does he need? Apparently he did not have the standard songs that guests were requesting, nor could he read the crowd to play the songs that would keep them dancing. At one wedding the DJ really played some old dried out useless songs, and did not have half the songs people requested. The quality is more important than the quantity. Most DJ's use many compilation CD's and order through a record pool buying service These compilations are great cost effective ways for DJ's to buy all the hits. Why spend $12.00 on a CD with 1 or 2 hits when you can spend $12.00 on a CD with 20 hits?
The problem with the DJ at my friend's wedding was he had about 100 regular CD's, so I would have to fish through 10 of them to find 2 decent hits that I thought the crowd might enjoy. This DJ and his setup were not even facing the dance floor!! Could anyone be more stupid! He spent most of the time with his back to the dance floor (his equipment was facing the back wall) flipping through his small collection of CDs for the next song when he should have been reading the crowd. He even played several songs more than once! Then he complained to me that no one was out there dancing. Gee, I think we're going to have to book time on the Pentagon's Cray III computer to figure this one out. Obviously the DJ did not determine ahead of time what musical preferences would be, nor did he read the crowd properly. So no wonder the dance floor was empty.
A BAD WEDDING DJ CAN RUIN THE BEST OF WEDDINGS!
The same aforementioned DJ asked me to pick a few songs from his collection to get the crowd going, which I did. He lacked 2 songs that several guests asked to hear, which every DJ should have. Also, he did such a poor job wiring his Karaoke monitor, that he had to fiddle with it a many times during the reception, and finally gave up. No more Karaoke. He hardly ever got on the mic to motivate anyone to dance either. It seemed like he was there to just queue up CD's and nothing else. Heck I'd have done that for free and saved my friend the money and aggravation. The bride was upset after the wedding about this. No wonder the DJ complained to me there was no one on the dance floor. We had to choose a couple of tunes for him which DID fill the dance floor. If the DJ is not constantly motivating the crowd, the floor will be empty, and your reception will be a bust. It's like a strange quiet party. You need constant motivation from an experienced crowd pleaser. This same DJ did not even help us during the Macarena (it was THE dance back then, what can I say). At our wedding, the DJ and assistant both showed us the moves so we did not all crash into each other and abandon the floor like my friend's wedding. After the wedding the bride expressed her anguish, shaking her head, saying this guy came highly recommended. Keep in mind this is the exception, not the norm.
The DJ at my brother's wedding really screwed things up. He was so highly recommended by everyone and my brother was at a loss for words trying to figure out how everything went south on him. The DJ did not play the songs he was supposed to play. He missed the song for the Bride & Dad dance! What a big mistake. During the Groom & Mom dance, the groom and mom were kept waiting alone on the empty dance floor for 5 minutes because the wedding disc jockey could not get his player to work. Let's see I think you just push the one that says "play"....
You can see I am not just giving you anecdotal evidence, we have been to several weddings where the DJ was the main factor in whether the reception was boom or bust.
Most DJ's are excellent, but you can see the importance of a little due diligence ahead of time. Try to see them at a function first or on video.
DJ's Should Know The Itinerary! It is the DJ's responsibility to know when all the events are supposed to occur during reception, like cake cutting, bouquet tosses, birthday surprises, etc. The DJ we mentioned in the preceding paragraph did not know when anything was being done. Around cake cutting time, I asked him when it was going to occur and he had no clue. The DJ's job is to work with catering, and know when meals are being served and when the milestone events are to take place. NOBODY in the whole wedding knew when anything was happening so it was somewhat confusing. The DJ and the caterer should have this under control before your reception begins! The DJ, caterer, and Photographer should all be in contact and playing off the same sheet of music.
Cordless Mics Are a Plus! I'm sure some DJ's will gripe at me for this, but the microphone chord is a safety hazard, and it is restricting, although some venues you cannot get out of using cords, due to interference issues. A wireless microphone system, if properly setup and sound checked, and stocked with a redundant backup with batteries, should work out just fine. Sure there's headaches associated with wireless systems, such as interference on the same frequency, and some reception halls, cordless just won't work no matter how hard they try. But testing and redundancy is the key. We had no problems at all during our 4 hour reception, and our DJ used only a wireless headset the whole evening. This is not a requirement, just a preference. Many fine DJ's are still using corded microphones. Remember, some areas you just cannot use wireless microphone due to local interference.
What about Chicken Dance, or Hokey Pokey? Some people love it, some people hate it. The consensus among our friends and numerous coworkers is that we made the right choice in NOT allowing it in our wedding. I believe these songs are outlawed in fifteen states now, anyway. Just kidding. Most guests feel Uncomfortable doing these cheesy dances. I even felt uncomfortable doing the Macarena. But it's your wedding, and you might want to hear them, that's fine too. But the point is let the wedding disc jockey know your preference. If you hate these songs, you would hate to be surprised by your DJ playing them at the reception. Group effort songs (i.e. the old "Electric Slide" always fills the floor. The Macarena and the Electric Slide became popular in their day because people who can't dance will usually get up and dance to a group activity song. A good conga line will always fill the floor. Each group of people is different. I polled several friends, coworkers, and wedding guests of other weddings we attended, and it was unanimous: No Chicken Dance, it belongs at Octoberfest, not a wedding. But then many DJs email us to say that it's a favorite crowd pleaser at many weddings they do. Your group of people might have the best time in the world with it, but it's your decision.
Technical Issues. Everyone overlooks this, but it is an important factor when choosing your DJ. You are paying money for a professional and they better know their equipment. Ask them what speakers and amps they use. The better names are JBL and Electrovoice, with the "EV" on the speaker. This is another reason why you asked the DJ if they do corporate affairs, because they may use the same high quality equipment at your wedding. You don't want them using home stereo amplifiers and speakers because they will fail under the volume of use. We were at a wedding once and could not hear the DJ announcing the bridal party because the volume was too low and it was muffled, all base and hardly any treble. This DJ did not test the acoustics of the room with a simple sound check before they started. Can you say.... Equalizer? This is why they must have good equipment, and know how to set it up.
A DJ with a wireless headset is a plus. With the headset mic, the element is always right in front of the DJ's mouth, and the gain need not be set as high as a handheld microphone. Thus the headset is less likely to cause feedback, and if they place the antenna properly, there won't be any noise or interference. Also the DJ can easily roam around hands free, or even blend in with the crowd during group effort dances. If a DJ tells you wireless mics don't work, or give excuses why they don't work, it's because they either used cheap equipment, did not want to spend the money, or simply did not know how to properly setup tricky setup wireless mics. They can be difficult to setup. I've been to dozens of concerts with wireless mics and never saw a problem. Used properly, these units are great tools of the trade. On the other hand, I've seen DJs walk around swinging the mic, not noticing they are about to step into the Twilight Zone in front of the speaker and violate Jeff's Law of Wedding Acoustics mentioned earlier. Then, a loud shrill of feedback fills the room.
Lighting is another thing to consider. Can your DJ get additional lighting? Some people want it, some could care less if they want to save money. But we wanted to put on a show they would remember. If you want state of the art lighting, some of the bigger DJ companies can master this for you very easily. Again, this is where DJs with corporate event experience really excel. They usually have the top notch lighting, not old cheesy disco balls with 2 glorified lawn lights. We did go a little overboard, spending $800 on an intelligent lighting system consisting of 4 intelligent units and 2 sound activated gobos. Man what a show that was. The ballroom was FILLED with light. Many guests told us it looked like a rock concert, with numerous beams everywhere. And this did not upset the older crowd either, which was a worry of mine. We were pleasantly surprised to see many of them out there dancing the new tunes with us. This may not be for all of you, but if you have the means, go for it. Our wedding video looks like Soul Train. I was surprised that our DJ tried to talk us out of this package, stating corporations are the typical customer. But more and more "consumer" affairs are going this way.
You Must Have A Clear, Concise, Written Contract!
The contract should clearly state WHO will be your wedding DJ. If it is the owner, you want their name on your contract, with no switches allowed. You spent time interviewing the owner and you want that DJ listed. Be wary if they try to leave the name off, there could be a bait and switch. If they are using an assistant, make them itemize that as well. Did you agree to rent any additional lighting through your DJ? Better have that on there too. Your contract should list what type of standard lighting you are getting as well. Also have them list what their overtime charge is in case you decide to run late. You don't want any surprises there. Make sure all correct dates, times, address, phone numbers, and deposits are listed.
So what was our final package? We had the owner for 4 hours at $750, plus $850 for the computerized lighting. This also included an assistant, which is a great thing for a DJ to have. I know we went overboard, but what a show. It was still cheaper than the bands we looked at. One band was $12000! We ended up keeping the DJ for an extra hour and paid another $150, which was already stated in the contract. Sure this seems steep, and yes we could have done just the bare bones package, but it was a typical wedding for professional working people like my wife and I. This is not necessarily the way to go if you are trying to save money. Remember though, you get what you pay for. We got more than what we paid for. How many weddings were you at where several guests commented it was the best DJ they've ever seen? Our wedding was like that.
There are plenty of inexpensive DJs out there who will give you a wonderful evening. Some of you may not want all the glitz and flash we had. Some of you will be happy with an informal DJ who DOES do the condo or bar circuit. We just wanted to shed the light on it and abuse our First Amendment rights by stating many of our opinions on certain subjects. We did find the DJs however, to be the easiest of all the wedding industry people to work with. And you don't have to spend $1600! Just have fun picking your wedding disc jockey.

Hiring a DJ: Points to Consider
When you plan a party of any sort, your objective is to ensure that your guests have a good time, period. Your choice of entertainment, particularly if you are considering a Ventura / Santa Barbara DJ or disc jockey service, is crucial to that end. Who you choose for your wedding reception or special event will have a greater degree of effect than any other factor, such as food or location. The Ventura / Santa Barbara DJ you choose is a direct reflection on you. Here are some important points to remember when you interview a Ventura / Santa Barbara DJ or disc jockey service.
Prompt return of your phone calls or Emails: You should expect to get a call back or an Email back within 24 hours. Many Ventura / Santa Barbara DJ’s are out working and may not be able to return your call within an hour or two.
Willingness to meet with you and present his/her service: Will the Ventura / Santa Barbara DJ or disc jockey try to meet with you soon, or is he/she just trying to book the date sight unseen? Is their material neat and professional looking, and is their presentation organized and informative?

Is the person knowledgeable about your type of event? There are all kinds of DJ’s. Club DJ’s, wedding DJ’s, Rave DJ’s…the list is endless!! Can the DJ you interview handle your type of event? Ask the Ventura / Santa Barbara DJ how many events of your type that he/she has done.
What sort of documents does the DJ use to procure your business? In a good interview, the DJ should show you several documents. First and foremost is a planner. A sample copy of the CONTRACT to be used should be available as well as a schedule of pricing information. A DJ may also give you a list of references. CALL THEM!! Will the DJ that you interview be the person that will perform at your event? This is THE most common complaint about the DJ industry today. Consider this when pricing your DJ service: You should consider your DJ service an insurance policy that ensures that all of the other money you spend will not result in bad memories or a less than enjoyable occasion. You do get what you pay for. Good entertainment is NOT cheap, and cheap entertainment often is NOT good!! And yet many people will pay far more for a cake, flowers, or food than they will for the most crucial ingredient at a party – the music. When was the last time you saw a cake reading a crowd and spinning a CD, motivating a dance floor crowd, or making announcements in a dignified elegant way? Further, when was the last time you heard a guest tell you “Boy, that prime rib was great, I can’t wait until I go to another party to have that again”? No, that DOES NOT HAPPEN. Instead, they talk about the music that was played, and whether they had a good time or not. The music is always what they will talk about and whether the Ventura / Santa Barbara DJ was any good or not.

A good article I found on Mobile Beat, wanted to share with the dj's out thereDJ PricingSome DJs rationalize their shoddy service with low rates.. Others think being a Mobile DJ is a license to StealThey are out there. Poorly-trained, under-qualified DJs who are having a negative effect on the whole profession. Some are simply hacks who take jobs for rates far below what most professional services could even consider. Others work for large DJ companies with slick marketing who promise the client the highest quality, but deliver a disaster. They are the bottom feeders and con-artists of the DJ profession. Rather than swim along with the stream of DJs who take pride in their service and compete for a professional rate, they simply take whatever falls through the cracks. Often, their rates are 50, 60, and even 75 percent less than the reputable services.But this is not about unfair price competition. What's really at stake is the credibility of the DJ profession overall. For the most part, these bottom feeders lack any significant level of training or experience, as well as the proper equipment to do a competent job. The one thing they have in their favor is price. They have learned that there is a segment of the population that will pay them to performe at least once.While they may never be hired back, many of these DJs can get through a high school dance, class reunion, or summer picnic without causing serious long-term damage. The area they are sparking the greatest concern is the wedding market, where there is plenty of opportunity for the cut-rate, inexperienced DJ to really wreak some havoc.Why so cheap?Too often, prospective clients forget the old adage "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." The fact of the matter is, no DJ or KJ with properly maintained, professional gear, a legal music library, and proper training would want to work a four- or five-hour wedding for a hundred bucks. Most weddings take place on weekends and, while larger DJ companies may be able to handle multiple events simultaneously, the single operator is limited to a maximum of four events on a weekend (assuming a Friday night job, a back-to-back Saturday, and possibly a light Sunday afternoon gig). Regardless of how much a DJ enjoys the work or how big a rush they get out of performing, any DJ who would work four gigs for a total of $400 (or less) is extremely challenged in terms of their business sense. As a result, DJs who rely primarily on price to attract clients usually offer little or no customer service. In addition, they use substandard gear, carry a meager music library, and leave much to be desired as far as their personal interaction skills or the type of impression they make. In other words, they aren't doing it just for the money. Some see it as a way to break into the business. For others, it's an ego thing.Low price loopMost people who hire DJs, especially for weddings, are first timers. They don't know what questions to ask and they certainly don't know what the answers should be. In many ways they are more in the dark shopping for a DJ then they are shopping for a used car. If they call five different DJs and get prices ranging from $75 or less to $425 or more, it's bound to be confusing.Not surprising, most cut-rate DJs get their bookings through non-traditional channels. For example, it would be very unlikely to find one of these jocks with a display at a mall bridal show, or even with an ad in the yellow pages. Instead, their jobs come through inter-office or inter-family referrals. For example, Jane works with Mary and Mary's cousin Fred is a DJ. Mary refers Fred. Jane, not knowing any better, makes him her first call. Fred, who has plenty of white space on his booking calendar, quotes a price too good to refuse. At no time does the conversation enter into the DJ's experience or abilities. For Fred it's a booking. For Jane, it's one less thing to worry about and, backed by Mary's recommendation, she feels she has made a good choice.Long term effectEver had a prospect comment something like, "My sister had a DJ at her wedding and he was terrible. His sound system was horrible. He played heavy metal during dinner, didn't have the right song for the bridal dance, screwed up the names of everyone in the bridal party, and wouldn't play any of the songs my sister requested."Most likely, the sister hired her DJ based only on price, without properly checking credentials, background or experience. Unfortunately, in the aftermath of a disastrous wedding, that fact is forgotten. Her DJ was bad, and now you have to reestablish this prospect's confidence in DJs.On the up side, Mark Ashe, of Agawam, Mass., says that while cut-rate DJs may hurt the professional services in the short run, it is helping to educate consumers. Ashe says, "Once someone is burned by a poor DJ, they immediately start sharing the experience with family and friends. Word-of-mouth advertising is a two-way street and when it's based on a negative experience it travels twice as fast." In the meantime, Ashe suggests using cut-rate DJs as a point of comparison, adding "Most of them offer so little in terms of experience, customer service, or performance, they make those of us with serious operations look that much better."The second effect that rate cutters have on the market in a specific area is that they reduce the perceived value of a DJ. If one or two DJs start cutting rates just to fill their calendars, and others follow suit, before long every one has a packed calendar and no one is making a decent wage.The solution, of course, would be for everyone to stick to their established rates. According to Jim Baxter of Colorado Sound 'N Light in Denver, Colo., "Most people's buying decisions are based on fear. They buy a car when they fear the old one will break down and leave them stranded. They stock up on food when they hear there's a storm on the way. It's human nature. Now apply that to DJs. Let's say a client calls five DJs in a market. Four are relatively close in price but the fifth is way low. In most cases, the client is going to realize that there must be a reason why that DJ's price is so low. If they are really concerned about value and the quality of the performance they are going to get, they'll choose one of the other four even if they charge more. Every market needs at least one cost-cutter so the rest of us have a point of reference."Of course, there are also those prospects whose biggest fear is being overcharged and that makes them tasty prey for the rate cutters and bottom feeders. If they happen to call two or three discount DJs before you, they may not get to you at all.Baxter says it all comes down to the need for DJs to understand their market and carefully tune their selling skills. "I learned early on that there are five types of customers. That's why Ford and Chevy offer more than one model and why there is K-Mart, Sears and Nieman-Marcus. If all a client wants is low price, I won't pursue it but I know plenty of DJs who will, especially if all that client wants is someone to play music. Some consumers want steak, others are happy with hamburger. I just wish more DJs would make up their minds as to which segment of the market they want to go for and just do it. As for those clients who choose a DJ just because he was the cheapest in townÉ they won't make that mistake again!"

IPods and DJ Obsolesence

The ubiquitous little digital device holds a lot of songs and provides a focal point for big changes in the DJ profession

Although the jury is still deliberating—and probably will be for the foreseeable future—on whether the mobile disc jockey is obsolete, nevertheless, as Bob Dylan once famously intoned, “The times, they are a changin’.”
Although the industry has endured and embraced change since leveraging the popularity of disco in the mid-1970’s to become a viable profession, a potentially perfect storm of several trends and products appear to be converging, which may shake up the industry like a 7.0 earthquake—and render the obsolescence debate a moot point.

P-P-Pod Generation
In 2005, Apple sold 32 million iPods—14 million alone in the fourth quarter of the year, according to CEO Steve Jobs—garnering a stunning 60% share of the portable music player market, according to NPD Group, a market research firm.
The company’s iTunes store dominates the music download sector with an 83% market share, Apple claims. iTunes is now one of the top 10 music retailers in the country, propelling the nascent digital music market where it has never gone before, topping well-known music sellers such Tower Records and Sam Goody, according to NPD.

DIY…Why?
Naturally, the combination of a wildly popular portable music player with sufficient storage capacity to amass literally thousands of tunes, wireless Internet connectivity (wi-fi hotspots), simple organizational functionality and the convenience of legitimate downloading has spiked the wedding industry buzz meter with the catchy budget slasher, the “iPod wedding.”
“What could be easier?" said Lori Leibovich, editor of IndieBride.com, a website for brides in a CNET news article on iPod weddings. "You bring it, you program it, it sounds great. Design This
Remember Aldus PageMaker? With the power and relative ease incorporated into the ground-breaking graphics program, everyone would be able to design their own flyers, logos, promotion pieces and so much more. What happened? Well, a lot of poorly-designed, ineffective advertising and promotion pieces were published by business owners and marketing people who did not have experience, design training, or an eye for design, fonts, message development, graphics, and placement.
An iPod is a great starting point, but a wedding reception still requires a system able to deftly satisfy the audio needs of a facility with a couple of hundred guests present, a vehicle with sufficient bulk to transport the equipment, at least one individual to set up and take down the system, an able MC, and someone to seek responsibility for the execution of all those tasks.
“An iPod-type device can give you music playback but, can it mind the reception?” asks Carl Mindling of Carl Mindling Music, serving the Bay Area.

Careless Whisper
While the potential is seductive for the client—program your favorite music at one of the most important events in your life—the promise for the DJ is equally enticing—and equally fraught with potential danger.
“As far as the iPod/laptop DJ goes, I am already starting to see a backlash by clients,” says Mindling, a mobile since 1969. “One prospective bride I met saw a DJ at her venue’s showcase event. She said he opened the laptop, pushed play and then spent the rest of the evening eating and schmoozing while the laptop shuffled tunes. This auto pilot approach to entertainment completely turned her off. Her first question to me was what format I use for playback.”

If It’s Not Scottish…
Others see the potential—similar to the benefit gained by experienced graphic designers with PageMaker as a new, powerful tool—of the digital media player in the hands of a competent, conscientious entertainer.
“I think that iPods will actually help the mobile DJ entertainer,” offers Matt Bixby of Willamette Valley DJ, serving the Western Oregon market. “The fact that music, and the technology to play it, is now so readily available to the consumer, should allow the mobile entertainer to better illustrate that he or she is not ‘just the music.’”

Vaudeville Revisited
Indeed, the continual embrace of additional skills and roles, such as MC, comic, dancer, game show host, interactive guru, is reshaping a client’s, as well as the industry’s definition of what a mobile entertainer offers.
“Skills such as ‘reading the crowd,’ voice-acting, and motivating guests will set the mobile entertainer apart from the ‘just push play’ DJ,” notes Bixby. “I predict that companies providing DJs that are little more than ‘button-pushers’ will find their markets shrinking, while the DJs that are able to effectively market their specialized skills will thrive.”

The More Things Change…
While the iPod, online digital music access, wi-fi, and the continued education of the mobile entertainer encompass seismic trends, Mindling distinguishes another, potentially devastating ingredient in this brewing tempest: “I see homogenization hitting our industry. Why not? It is in the malls and just about everywhere else in modern life. The mobile DJ and, in particular, the wedding DJ, has become somewhat of a cliché.
“People’s perceptions and expectations are getting firmly rooted. Every time I try to play ‘Macho Man’ or perhaps ‘In the Navy’ for a groom who is a Navy Seal for example, the result is the same. The Village People song spurs some guest to come up and request ‘Y.M.C.A.’”
And, that leads Mindling to an unsettling observation. ”Clients’ (guests’) expectations are NOT changing. That is the problem. They are distilling a wedding down to about 30 songs and it is getting harder and harder to introduce newer or different to that formula. Also, cookie-cutter DJ companies are taking advantage of this homogenized party concept and helping to perpetuate it.”
Is the mobile DJ obsolete? Is the iPod threatening to divide the market and cut out many at the “human jukebox” or “just push play” end of the mobile spectrum? Will wi-fi actualize the “instant request,” the “any song, any time” mentality? Are clients becoming less sophisticated, more predictable in their entertainment interpretation?
Is a perfect storm gathering force and aiming at the DJ industry?

A reality-based cautionary tale for entertainment shoppers

Not to toot my own horn, but I think facts about my business speak for themselves: over 25 years experience in the live and recorded music business; tons of the best performance gear the industry has to offer; a confident and experienced stage personality; two separate office locations; and unlimited means of communication—three separate telephone lines with an answering service operating 24/7/365, two fax lines, a website, e-mail and, yes, even a door bell. Oh, and I forgot to mention my three (count them, three) complete sets of back-up gear in the truck at every gig (never used, by the way). I guess it’s just a fixation, or maybe a fear of one day possibly not being able to complete a show at a wedding. (They usually only do them once, you know!)

Fuzzy Math?
Yes, with all the gear and qualifications listed above you would think I’d be one of the more expensive disc jockeys around. Yet, at an average of $1,000 to $1,200 for a great five-hour wedding with unlimited planning and preparation (and fully insured), I submit that I am actually a bargain, compared to the more expensive DJs in the area, who are priced at around $500 to $600 for the same amount of playing time.
“Wait a second,” I hear you saying, “don’t you know how to add and subtract?” Bear with me for moment—I think you’ll see that my numbers add up.
OK. Imagine you are a bride or groom planning the biggest event in your life, up to this point at least. Are you with me? You start out talking about it every minute for days on end. You are really excited. You go out and look for a banquet hall; after checking out several, you finally book one. Next, you select an exciting, delicious menu with some really fabulous appetizers. You shop, shop and shop some more, hiring your film crew, choosing a gown, bridesmaids’ dresses, tuxedos, invitations, etc. In other words, you go the whole nine yards and beyond.

What a Bargain
Then you start shopping for your entertainment. You have already spent a bundle on everything else; it may be time to start cutting back on the bucks. So you come and visit with me and/or some other well-qualified DJs in the area and…wow! You didn’t realize it would cost so much. After all, the DJ just pushes some buttons and plays some CDs, the same thing you have been doing at home for years, right? For this you need to pay $1,000?
Then you remember that this guy down the block has lots of CDs and when you have been to his house, his music always sounded really good. You ask him if he could DJ your wedding and he is happy to and he will only charge you $500. Great! What a deal!
Later, after several futile attempts to get him to call you back to go over some details, he calls you back the day before your wedding and apologizes, saying something about his aunt being ill in Alaska. And, by the way, he can’t make your wedding. But, there is good news. He’s going to send his son to cover for him. They’ll divvy up his music and split the equipment. The day is saved.

Multiplying the Savings
It’s wedding day and Son of Cheap DJ is only fifteen minutes late…at least he got there before you had a heart attack. Also, keep in mind you are saving big bucks. No harm done: he’s late, but in the grand scheme of things, what’s 15 minutes?
He carries his gear in through the front door of the hall, noisily pushing past your well-dressed guests who are trying to enjoy cocktails and conversation. After a few trips back and forth, he is set and ready to roll—only 45 minutes later than planned. “IT’S ONLY ROCK AND ROLL, BUT I LIKE IT…” suddenly erupts from the speakers and a few glasses are spilled. Well, he likes the Stones and thought your guests would like to keep the cocktail hour up beat. Remember, like his dad, he too knows his music.

After an uninspired reading of the bridal party introduction sheet and the butchering of several of your closest friends’ names, it’s time for your very first dance as husband and wife. Oh no: for a moment it seems that he doesn’t have your wedding song, but he has it covered. Yes, he did leave the original copy with his dad, but he has an extra karaoke copy and he knows all the words to “At Last.” Whew! The day is saved again.

Counting the Cost
I think by now you get the picture. Needless to say, it wasn’t a great event, although I’m sure it was interesting and gave your guests a whole lot to talk about. Sorry that all of the guests other than immediate family had to leave an hour or more before the party was to end. “The baby sitter is having a rough time with the kids…” etc.
Too bad your $20,000, once-in-a-lifetime event fizzled instead of sizzled. But hey, the place was really nice and the food was great, and after all is said and done, you should be happy: you saved $500 on the entertainment. So why does it seem like you paid a much higher price for the cheapest DJ?

Hi Everyone!

And welcome to LatinMusicDJ.com home of Bilingual Entertainment.

This Summer season is hot! (duh!) Seriously, a lot of fine events. I am so glad of the type of events I’ve been having the pleasure to be part of.

On June 3 we started of by doing Alexis Maravilla’s Quinceañera, in Hayward, who requested nothing but the latest Hip Hop & R&B.

June 10 brought lots of happiness to Dave and Laura Cruz, who got married in San Mateo, followed by an evening of Old School funk and disco flashbacks.

On June 17 I had the tremendous pleasure of DJ’ing for Jaz and Jessica at Wente’s Winery . Bi-Cultural of the finest Indian music and all Americana style top 40 and classic Hip Hop/R&B.

June 23 I turned up a notch on the dance floor at Allison Winery in Sunol, for Jan-Michael and Michelle Galvin. Another bi-cultural wedding at it’s best. A mixture of Hawaiian-Spanish-Native American and Brazilian. Viva La Samba! Great mixture of great sounds brought everyone to the dance floor at this classy event.

Before I go ahead on what’s coming up on the next few days/months, I would like to mention I had a great time at the Rocha’s event on May 6th.

The chemistry of each event is a gift, as two souls come together, bringing in two worlds into a single space to celebrate the union.

The planning, organizing and timing of the event is of the essence in order to make it happen, just the way it is.

It used to be that DJ’s were DJ’s, now it has become an easy way to make money. The good thing is that there still are very good disc jockeys, (including some here on Craigslist) who present ourselves in a very professional manner, we don’t depend on gimmicks to attract business and take people’s money, time and effort. You can tell when some one offers you the world in one day, those who claim they can do everything, including doing back flips on stage. Realistically speaking, there has to be some level of professionalism to do a major event. Don’t go for those who claim they have done thousands of weddings, or those who dj’d one time for their cousin Lily. What about that selected group of friends you invited? Or think about all the time, money and effort you have been investing, all the planning, all the dreams, for that special day. Would you trust them, on the hands of an amateur? Sure they can do it for 50 bucks an hour, and if you try harder they are willing to do all night for $200.00. How can a DJ who makes $800.00 per month afford, good quality tracks, yes, good quality as in purchased music, high end sound system, a clean suit or tuxedo, reliable transportation, planning your event, doing all the research to make your event special. Makes sense? That is why, it is so easy to find any DJ, but so hard to find a good DJ. I am not saying hire me, because I am the best, I am the ultimate, I am exclusive, I am , I am....this and that. Hire me, because I will be there for YOU and your invited guest. Hire me, because I am qualified to do the job. Not because I boast having two billion songs (when we know we can only play 200 at the most), or because I list every single town on the map. I simply say, Northern California. Contrateme porque mi experiencia me permite hablar, mas fuete que las palabras que yo digo, porque me voy a encargar personalmente que todo corra bien. No me contrate porque ando presumiento que tengo dos millones de canciones en una laptop, cuando se sabe que en un buen evento con doscientas es suficiente, siempre y cuando sean las que usted piede y las que la gente disfruta. DJ PricingSome DJs rationalize their shoddy service with low rates.. Others think being a Mobile DJ is a license to StealThey are out there. Poorly-trained, under-qualified DJs who are having a negative effect on the whole profession. Some are simply hacks who take jobs for rates far below what most professional services could even consider. Others work for large DJ companies with slick marketing who promise the client the highest quality, but deliver a disaster. They are the bottom feeders and con-artists of the DJ profession. Rather than swim along with the stream of DJs who take pride in their service and compete for a professional rate, they simply take whatever falls through the cracks. Often, their rates are 50, 60, and even 75 percent less than the reputable services.But this is not about unfair price competition. What's really at stake is the credibility of the DJ profession overall. For the most part, these bottom feeders lack any significant level of training or experience, as well as the proper equipment to do a competent job. The one thing they have in their favor is price. They have learned that there is a segment of the population that will pay them to performe at least once.While they may never be hired back, many of these DJs can get through a high school dance, class reunion, or summer picnic without causing serious long-term damage. The area they are sparking the greatest concern is the wedding market, where there is plenty of opportunity for the cut-rate, inexperienced DJ to really wreak some havoc.Why so cheap?Too often, prospective clients forget the old adage "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." The fact of the matter is, no DJ or KJ with properly maintained, professional gear, a legal music library, and proper training would want to work a four- or five-hour wedding for a hundred bucks. Most weddings take place on weekends and, while larger DJ companies may be able to handle multiple events simultaneously, the single operator is limited to a maximum of four events on a weekend (assuming a Friday night job, a back-to-back Saturday, and possibly a light Sunday afternoon gig). Regardless of how much a DJ enjoys the work or how big a rush they get out of performing, any DJ who would work four gigs for a total of $400 (or less) is extremely challenged in terms of their business sense. As a result, DJs who rely primarily on price to attract clients usually offer little or no customer service. In addition, they use substandard gear, carry a meager music library, and leave much to be desired as far as their personal interaction skills or the type of impression they make. In other words, they aren't doing it just for the money. Some see it as a way to break into the business. For others, it's an ego thing.Low price loopMost people who hire DJs, especially for weddings, are first timers. They don't know what questions to ask and they certainly don't know what the answers should be. In many ways they are more in the dark shopping for a DJ then they are shopping for a used car. If they call five different DJs and get prices ranging from $75 or less to $425 or more, it's bound to be confusing.Not surprising, most cut-rate DJs get their bookings through non-traditional channels. For example, it would be very unlikely to find one of these jocks with a display at a mall bridal show, or even with an ad in the yellow pages. Instead, their jobs come through inter-office or inter-family referrals. For example, Jane works with Mary and Mary's cousin Fred is a DJ. Mary refers Fred. Jane, not knowing any better, makes him her first call. Fred, who has plenty of white space on his booking calendar, quotes a price too good to refuse. At no time does the conversation enter into the DJ's experience or abilities. For Fred it's a booking. For Jane, it's one less thing to worry about and, backed by Mary's recommendation, she feels she has made a good choice.Long term effectEver had a prospect comment something like, "My sister had a DJ at her wedding and he was terrible. His sound system was horrible. He played heavy metal during dinner, didn't have the right song for the bridal dance, screwed up the names of everyone in the bridal party, and wouldn't play any of the songs my sister requested."Most likely, the sister hired her DJ based only on price, without properly checking credentials, background or experience. Unfortunately, in the aftermath of a disastrous wedding, that fact is forgotten. Her DJ was bad, and now you have to reestablish this prospect's confidence in DJs.On the up side, Mark Ashe, of Agawam, Mass., says that while cut-rate DJs may hurt the professional services in the short run, it is helping to educate consumers. Ashe says, "Once someone is burned by a poor DJ, they immediately start sharing the experience with family and friends. Word-of-mouth advertising is a two-way street and when it's based on a negative experience it travels twice as fast." In the meantime, Ashe suggests using cut-rate DJs as a point of comparison, adding "Most of them offer so little in terms of experience, customer service, or performance, they make those of us with serious operations look that much better."The second effect that rate cutters have on the market in a specific area is that they reduce the perceived value of a DJ. If one or two DJs start cutting rates just to fill their calendars, and others follow suit, before long every one has a packed calendar and no one is making a decent wage.The solution, of course, would be for everyone to stick to their established rates. According to Jim Baxter of Colorado Sound 'N Light in Denver, Colo., "Most people's buying decisions are based on fear. They buy a car when they fear the old one will break down and leave them stranded. They stock up on food when they hear there's a storm on the way. It's human nature. Now apply that to DJs. Let's say a client calls five DJs in a market. Four are relatively close in price but the fifth is way low. In most cases, the client is going to realize that there must be a reason why that DJ's price is so low. If they are really concerned about value and the quality of the performance they are going to get, they'll choose one of the other four even if they charge more. Every market needs at least one cost-cutter so the rest of us have a point of reference."Of course, there are also those prospects whose biggest fear is being overcharged and that makes them tasty prey for the rate cutters and bottom feeders. If they happen to call two or three discount DJs before you, they may not get to you at all.Baxter says it all comes down to the need for DJs to understand their market and carefully tune their selling skills. "I learned early on that there are five types of customers. That's why Ford and Chevy offer more than one model and why there is K-Mart, Sears and Nieman-Marcus. If all a client wants is low price, I won't pursue it but I know plenty of DJs who will, especially if all that client wants is someone to play music. Some consumers want steak, others are happy with hamburger. I just wish more DJs would make up their minds as to which segment of the market they want to go for and just do it. As for those clients who choose a DJ just because he was the cheapest in townÉ they won't make that mistake again!"

Unless you have been working with a "deejay" for a while, you will soon learn that, finding the right entertainment company, is not easy. Just type the word dj on your favorite search engine or browser and you will soon find out the search could be endless. By now, you are probably thinking, "tell me something I don′t already know".
In essence, all DJ‚s or Entertainment companies boil down to the same three elements, which I am about to describe. To make it easy for you to remember I will put it down as the three "R‚s" Which are: Rates, Reliability and Reputation.
Rates
When I receive calls from people, most callers would first ask, "how much do you charge?" Quickly letting me know rate is the most important thing, for that particular caller. Before I give out my rates I ask them the type of event, the venue or place, the amount of invited guests and most important, what are their expectations. What most people forget is that a DJ can either make or break the event or occasion. That is a fact. Well informed planners find the dj before they even contract anybody else. The sad reality is that for the most part, you get what you pay for and cheap are not necessarily the best bargain to find. A good DJ has to charge more, simply because, he/she will invest more money in better equipment, reliable transportation, up to date music library and preparation or tools to enhance each event. There is only an x amount of available dates in a year, for a single dj to fill, and if he/she is a true professional, that dj must charge accordingly.
Reliability
You need to make sure your DJ is reliable in all the sense of the word. That he/she has reliable equipment, a reliable source for his/her music, (from this point I will use the word he to describe either gender). That he possess reliable transportation, and that he has a plan B in mind in case of an emergency, or any major delay.
Reputation
Does your dj have a trail of happy clients? Is he a reputable talented individual who knows his music, or is he a hobbyist or an amateur? How many events has he succesfuly accomplished? Does he take pride on his work? Does he dj for personal enjoyment or does he dj to provide quality entertainment to others? (Meaning you and your guest).
I have seen and heard the good, the bad and the ugly, in my twenty years of being a dj, to my fortune, my reputation as quality entertainer is not so easily matched and my experience at doing a wide variety of events for a wide social spectrum, allows me to be in a position, to providing you, with some of the best, free available advice, and hopefully, save you some grief in the near future.

Planning your event following some one else's footsteps is asking for trouble. Worst yet! Allowing some one else to plan your reception, is the biggest mistake I've seen.

After the solemness of the ceremony, it's time for the celebration. Many reception traditions have developed over time to become an expected and enjoyed part of the marriage ritual. While the course of events will vary somewhat from wedding to wedding, here's a general idea of how things should proceed.

The Menu
While the only two requirements for a wedding reception are cake and champagne, menus for marriage celebrations run the gamut from light breakfast to an elaborate dinner. The time of your wedding reception should dictate what is served. An early morning wedding calls for a breakfast or brunch, afternoon ceremonies may be accompanied by hors d'oeuvres or a light meal, and evening weddings generally call for a full dinner (which may be served by waiters or buffet style), unless they are held at 8 P.M. or later, at which time you may choose to offer only cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Your caterer or banquet manager can help you select an appropriate menu.
It is courteous to guests to serve a meal appropriate to the time your wedding reception is being held. If you do not plan to do so, use the wording "cake and champagne" or "cocktails and hors d'oeuvres" on your invitations so that they will know what to expect. In many parts of the country, the wording "reception" has come to denote a full meal.

The Receiving Line
The receiving line is the first element of the wedding reception (unless you already had one after your ceremony). It allows the bride and groom a chance to greet all their guests - an opportunity they might not otherwise have during a large reception.
To avoid making the receiving line a time consuming process, exchange brief, albeit warm, wishes to everyone as they pass by. It is also courteous for those on the receiving line to introduce the next person: "Mrs. Mauro, you look beautiful today! Have you met my parents yet, John and Cynthia O'Malley?" It can also help to pass the time by asking waiters to circulate with drinks and hors d'oeuvres while guests wait.
The line is usually formed with the mother of the bride first, then the father, followed by the groom's mother and father , and then the bride and groom. Divorced parents, however, should not stand together in the receiving line. For example, if the bride's parents are divorced and the groom's are not, the father of the bride may stand on the other side of the groom's parents. It is not necessary to have attendants in the receiving line.

Seating Arrangements
The members of the bridal party sit at a head table (often long and narrow or U-shaped) visible to all guests (it is often elevated, in which case it is called a dais). The bride and groom sit in the center with the ushers and bridesmaids alternately seated on either side. The groom is on the bride's left, with the maid of honor next to him. The best man sits on the bride's right.
If you are having a small wedding party, you may want to include spouses or dates of your bridal party at the head table. Or you two may choose to sit alone at a head table, and spread your wedding party around at other guest tables, which also allows them to sit with their partners. You may also include the child attendants at the head table, but if they are young, they may behave better and feel more comfortable seated with parents.
The table of honor - located near the head table - is where the parents of both the bride and groom, the wedding officiant, and sometimes grandparents sit during the wedding reception. if there are several people you would like seated at this place of honor, you may have two tables - perhaps one for the bride's family and one for the groom's. Divorced parents should be seated at different tables of honor with their partners and close family and friends.
Guests should be informed where they will sit by table cards that are placed on a small table outside the reception room. ("Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Table 5"). The tables should be prominently marked in an easy-to-follow order. You may also use place cards to notify guests about specific seats at their tables. they should have names on both sides (so other guests at the table can see them as well), and should be positioned above the plate. This is a good way to help guests become acquainted.
When planning your seating arrangements, keep in mind specific concerns of the guests: Don't sit elderly people near loud speakers or put strangers at a table if it can't be avoided. A good idea is to intersperse the groom's guest tables with the bride's guest tables in order to avoid an unfriendly "divider."

Introductions and Dancing
After the receiving line has been completed and the cocktail hour is finished, it will be time for guests to move into the main dining area. After all the guests have found their seats, a master of ceremonies (often the disc jockey, band leader or maitre'd) should introduce the bridal party. Instruct the master of ceremonies or whoever will be making the announcements beforehand on how you wish the names read (check pronunciation with attendants). The bride's parents should be the first to enter, followed by the groom's parents, flower girl and ring bearer, bridesmaids and ushers, best man and maid of honor, then finally the bride and groom. The raised arms of the attendants can form an arch of bouquets that the bride and groom go under.
The first dance often takes place right after the wedding party has been announced or may wait until after the meal is completed. This dance belongs to the bride and groom with all guests gathering around to watch. Toward the end of the song, the master of ceremonies or announcer should instruct the rest of the bridal party to join in with their respective partners. The guests may also be asked to join in at the end of the first dance.
At some time during the course of the celebration (but always after the first dance as husband and wife), the bride should have a farewell dance with her father, followed by the groom and his mother. In both cases, a nostalgic, sentimental song is often chosen. If your father will not be there or is deceased, you may choose another important male to share in this special dance with you (brother, uncle, grandfather). If you are not close to your father and feel more comfortable with your stepfather, you may share the dance with him. The same options apply for your new husband as well. And be sure that both of you dance with your new in-laws and honor attendants.

Toasting
It is customary at religious weddings to have the officiant say a blessing before everyone begins eating. Be sure and let your officiant know ahead of time that you would lie to include this, so that he or she is prepared. The bridal party and wedding guests should remain quiet and attentive during the blessing, regardless of their religious affiliations.
Just before the main meal is served, the best man is introduced and asks everyone to stand. You and your groom should remain seated. His toast may be brief and sentimental ("Here's to the happiness of a couple close to us all - Kathy and John") or it can be more detailed and personal, often amusing and anecdotal. Whatever the case, it should reflect the hope and happiness the two of you have for the future. At the end of his speech, the best man raises his glass and invites the other guests to do the same in a well-wishing toast. The bride and groom may then get up and say a few words of thanks and toast each other if they wish.

Cutting the Cake
The time-honored cake cutting ceremony illustrates the bond that is shared between husband and wife. The master of ceremonies should announce that this event is taking place and direct guests to this location. To cut the cake, place your hand on the cake knife while the groom places his hand over yours. The first slice is placed on a plate and you feed your husband a small piece, then you receive a bite from your husband. The remainder of the cake is then cut by waiters and distributed to guests. It is customary to save the top tier of the wedding cake, which can be frozen, to be enjoyed on your first anniversary.
Different from the bride's tall white cake, the groom's cake (which is optional) is traditionally a darker color, often made from chocolate. Usually it is displayed during the reception, then sliced and distributed to guests as take-home favors.

The Bouquet and Garter Ceremonies
Towards the end of the reception, the master of ceremonies may ask all eligible ladies to gather in the middle of the floor for the bouquet toss - the lucky recipient of which is said to be the next woman to marry. The bride should turn her back to the crowd and toss the bouquet over her head to the female guests and bridesmaids. (Or you may want to face everyone and take aim for a particular friend or relative.) Another way to throw the bouquet is to toss it out of the window of your car or limousine to waiting females as you leave for your honeymoon. Many brides m\now have two bouquets - one a smaller, less expensive version specifically made fro tossing, so that the bridal bouquet can be preserved as a wedding memento.
In the garter ceremony, the groom removes the garter from the bride's leg and tosses it in a similar fashion to the eligible men. According to legend, the man who catches it is the next to marry. The man then puts it on the leg of the woman who caught the bouquet, usually accompanied by music and fanfare.

When to Leave
It was once customary for the bride and groom to make a get-away during the reception to begin their honeymoon, and that was also the signal that the guests could start to leave. Nowadays, however, many couples choose to spend extra time with their out-of-town guests and stay at the reception until the very end. You may still change into going-away clothes (check with your reception site about changing rooms) and then come back to bid your guests a final farewell. Guests may throw rice, birdseed, or potpourri as you and your new husband make your exit.

This entry aims to give general advice on dealing with the clash of civilisations that is a multinational marriage. Some of it should also apply to multicultural marriage. For specific rules of etiquette in a given country, see this entry.

Location

There are at least four possible strategies for resolving the thorny question of where you do the deed:

Traditional Option

You pick one place to get married, the 'traditional' place. For western cultures, this will generally be the home town of the bride. This has the advantage of being easy to explain to others 'it's tradishun, innit!'. If the other side of the family are very insistent about it being at their place, or it is ridiculously difficult to get to the default option, then you might want to think again:

Alternative Option

If the traditional place is in some grim industrial town, or somewhere that poses obvious logistical issues, then you could switch it to the other side of the family. If they live somewhere that is easily and pleasantly combined with a holiday, then this makes it much more palatable for the side of the family that will have to travel further. They can also console themselves with the fact that this will relieve them of much of the organisational burden (see below).

If you live in some third location to both sets of parents, having it there has some significant advantages. More of your friends can come, and both of your families have to travel - no accusations of favouritism. You get to call more of the shots on what happens and organisational aspects are simplified. On the other hand, you won't be able to benefit from much family help.

Two Stop Option

If the families live a long way apart, this can be a popular choice. You have a ceremony in one spot with all of family X and just close members of family Y, and then a blessing or simply a party with all of family Y and just close members of family X. This saves on travelling for most of the guests and could be good if you have two very different cultures or religions to satisfy. It can bump up the costs and logistical issues, however, and your families don't really get to meet each other or your friends.

Desert Island Option

Both your families are giving you grief, your religions are incompatible or you can't face organising the do? Head off to Vegas, Gretna or somewhere nice and do it there. You could take just close family and friends, or just a couple of witnesses, or just the two of you - many places can sort out some witnesses. Have the honeymoon in the same spot, take plenty of photos or a video, and announce it as a fait accompli when you get back home. Your Auntie Mabel may never talk to you again, but did you like her anyway?

Ceremony and Traditions

Marrying someone from a different country makes some things more complex, but it also makes some things easier. If there are any traditions or obligations that your family would like you to do but that you and your better half are not keen on, simply explain that hiring a limo/doing the first dance/leaving before the end or whatever is not the done thing in the country of your spouse, and that undertaking that action would cause major embarassment. By playing the two cultures against each other, you should be able to do mainly the things that you want to do. Even if a given tradition is not what is normally done in that country, you may find that your guests consider that it is a great idea1.

Not strictly the topic of this entry, but if you, and your family have strong religious beliefs that differ from your better half and her family then things can get difficult. If one half of the wedding is not religious, then it is quite common for them simply to go along with whatever ceremony is proposed: 'you want me to swear allegiance to the forest god? Sure, where do I sign?' Alternatively, religious clerics of various kinds are becoming more tolerant of mixed marriages in many places - it is possible to get a liberal rabbi and a tolerant protestant pastor to officiate at a mixed ceremony, for example - other combinations are undeniably possible. Otherwise, you need two ceremonies with the attendant cost and complications. The closer you are to the fundamental wing of your religion, the worse it will be, but then, you probably deserve it.

Language

What if your future beloved does not speak the same language as you? Even if you're both now bilingual, your family and friends are unlikely to have made that sort of progress. This can be a barrier, but with a bit of imagination and work, a lot can be achieved.

If you're lucky, the local mayor/priest/rabbi or whatever that is marrying you will agree to be translated at some point or speak a few words in the second language of the couple, where this applies. It is certainly worth asking, as not only will it reduce the 'stranger in a strange land' feeling of that side of the family, it is usually a good comedy moment as they get the sentences wrong or deliver them in a thick accent.

Similarly, there are many options for the speeches. Either you get both fathers or other speakers to do theirs in the foreign language, or a bilingual guest or spouse can simultaneously translate. Either will lighten the mood and get people in the right frame of mind for talking to each other.

For the sit down meal, it is not a good idea to put people who have no or little language in common on the same table. It's asking a lot of guests who do not know each other to create a rapport, without adding that complication. After dinner, when the alcohol has flowed and the dancing begins, is when people will relax enough to try a few words in a foreign language. It's amazing the sign language conversations that will ensue!

Food and Drink

Things are likely to be easier if you pick a menu that is a bit neutral. Foodstuffs like Foie gras or oysters would be typical on a French wedding menu, but you may find British guests unwilling to eat them. Similarly, vegetarianism may be unknown in the host country, but your veggie friends should not be expected to tuck in to raw steak. Linked to this can be different cultural values. This researcher needed to explain to his father-in-law that he shouldn't put too much money into the red wine, because the rate it was going to disappear down British gullets, he was going to be facing a serious bill! Too much choice can be difficult to handle for the company doing the food, but a buffet section to the meal will generally be simpler than a full set menu. As for the drink, cover a number of different options - if you do overestimate, it won't spoil. You'll just have a well stocked bar at home for a while...

Entertainment

More difficult than you would think. We may live in a globalised economy, but the type of pop music that will get people dancing varies a lot from country to country as well as generation to generation. If you have a DJ, you risk seeing people dancing in stages, depending as to whose music is currently playing. A much better option is the kind of dancing that is organised, but where people would expect to get up and try it. A Scottish or Irish Ceili band with a caller works very well, encouraging mingling and the possible exchange of words, 'I'm sorry, was that your toe?'

Also, another cultural issue is the length of the reception and the day in general. As well as following the dictum that a short wedding is a good wedding, try and allow some options (a spare room, some chairs outside etc) for those that do not want to party through the night, as well as those that do. Keep things as flexible as possible.

Other Logistics

If people are going to make the effort to travel a significant distance to get to your wedding, the least you can do is produce a few sheets of A4 with hotels, car hire and tourist attractions for the area. Distribute these with the invite. Bear in mind that if they don't speak the local language, all that kind of thing will be more tricky.

If one side of the family is coming on holiday to the region a few days before the wedding, they will expect to have activities arranged. This is one task that you should delegate to the parents or close family on that side, as you won't have time. They can use your information sheet to organise themselves.

Allow plenty of time to get the bureaucracy right, especially if your marriage is going to be important in terms of giving access to a new nationality for one of the couple. It can take a long time, and you may be asked for papers that do not exist in your home country.

On the day itself, be aware that the standard advice about delegating as much as possible to best man/maid of honour and parents may not apply if they only speak one of the languages. You may be one of the few bilingual people there, and this will mean that you will bear a heavier load than normal in introducing people, dealing with organisational stuff, and even getting crowds into the right place for the group photo. This makes it even more important than normal to get as much done beforehand as possible. Part of this should include organising a meet up between your parents and theirs, so that they can get those uncomfortable moments out of the way before the big day.

Wedding Gifts

By far the easiest solution is to get an internet based list for a big store somewhere near your home, or with a reputable dotcom that offers access to several shops. That way people can buy stuff for you with their credit card, you don't incur bank fees on cheques and they don't have to bring a present with them on the plane. Even where lists are not the norm for one side of the family, you can still put the word round discretely about the existence of the list, they'll soon see the light. And finally...

The hassle involved can sometimes make you wish you were marrying your cousin like your hillbilly relative did. Therefore, this researcher would like to leave you with three positive thoughts:

You are helping develop the human race - scientists have identified exogamy (sleeping with someone outside your immediate family circle) as an important stepping point in the development of homo sapiens
It's very difficult for the two families to have an argument if they can't speak to each other
Making the logistics more complicated than normal helps significantly in ensuring that people you don't like but have to invite stay away
